RENEWABLE ENERGY BRIEFING PAPER

A briefing paper in memory of one of its key contributors, Douglas Banks, and entitled Potential of Renewable Energy to contribute to National Electricity Emergency Response and Sustainable Development has been released providing an overview of the potential contribution of renewable energies to rapidly and cost-effectively address South Africa’s current power crisis, foster a ground swell of local industries with sustainable work opportunities and contribute to meeting our international commitment to climate change mitigation. Permission to include the paper on the REEEP-SA website is from Earthlife Africa, Johannesburg Branch .

REEEP announces Call for Proposals for EUR 4.3 million in grant funding
The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) announced a call for project proposals which support the development of markets for renewable energy and energy efficiency. The project call is REEEP's largest in its five year history with more than 4.3 million Euro available for projects in least developed countries and emerging market economies.

SANERI Awarded Regional Secretariat for REEEP
The South African National Energy Research Institute (SANERI) has been awarded the rights to host the Southern African Regional Secretariat for the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP). REEEP was formed in 2002 at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg as a multilateral partnership, to promote the uptake of renewable energy and energy efficiency, particularly in developing countries and economies in transition. REEEP currently consists of over 260 partners of which 40 are governments.

Sustainable Energy Regulation and Policymaking for Africa
A new training package on “Sustainable Energy Regulation and Policymaking for Africa” is now freely available via the REEEP website at www.reeep.org . Developed by UNIDO with contributions from a number of organisations, and co-funded by REEEP, it provides an introduction to the key issues relating to the energy market and energy regulation as they affect sustainable energy.

The SADC Energy Thematic Group
The recently established SADC Energy Thematic Group met in Gaborone earlier this year to discuss regional energy challenges.  The Energy Thematic Group (ETG) has its origins in the Windhoek Declaration, whereby a new SADC-donor partnership was established with a view to implementing a SADC Common Agenda, organised along the lines of thematic groups.

Illuminating Africa
Carbon Community is excited to announce that its first shipment of 1,000 solar light sets is being shipped from China to Tanzania, Africa. As many Tanzanian villagers do not have access to electricity, they use kerosene lamps as light sources at night. This is not only financially costly but also environmentally, as burning kerosene causes carbon dioxide emissions.
