The SADC Energy Thematic Group |
The recently established SADC Energy Thematic Group met in Gaborone earlier this year to discuss regional energy challenges. The Energy Thematic Group (ETG) has its origins in the Windhoek Declaration, whereby a new SADC-donor partnership was established with a view to implementing a SADC Common Agenda, organised along the lines of thematic groups.
The ETG aims to assist member states to rise to the challenges in the energy sector, to combine efforts to ensure the optimum use of funds and resources, and support SADC priorities. The ETG is currently lead by Norway. In the last ETG meeting in Gaborone, the International Co-operating Partners (ICPs) or "donors" recognized the enormous challenges the SADC Member States are facing to meet the region's increasing energy demand. Whereas energy forecasts for almost a decade have predicted the power deficit currently being experienced in many SADC countries, progress in implementing projects to alleviate the situation has been slow. A set-back in economic as well as social development may be the consequence for the region, requiring a renewed commitment to energy sector development projects from member states and cooperating partners, so as to proactively meet the region's energy challenges. Arguably, one of the major tasks of the ETG is to keep track of energy programmes in the region and assess the extent to which these efforts are meeting energy demands in the region. As one of the ICP’s participating in this Energy Thematic Group, REEEP is proud to be involved in efforts to improve the status quo of energy matters in the region. The REEEP 7th Project Bid is open for this year and will look to fund projects that address some of the challenges identified above. For more information on the SADC ETG please visit www.sadc.int |
